Sportswear is inspired by athletic wear but designed for everyday wear. It prioritizes comfort, freedom of movement, and a relaxed look. It includes pieces like sneakers, tracksuits, leggings, hoodies, polo shirts, and jogging jackets, often paired with more urban or elegant clothing.

The origins of sportswear date back to the early 20th century, when women began to participate more in physical activities such as tennis, cycling, and swimming. These new activities necessitated more functional clothing than the traditional outfits of the time. Designers like Coco Chanel helped popularize more comfortable women's clothing inspired by sportswear, thus contributing to women's emancipation in terms of fashion.

In the 1970s and 1980s, sportswear experienced a considerable boom thanks to the popularization of jogging, aerobics, and fitness. Major sportswear brands developed collections designed for everyday wear. Colorful tracksuits, running shoes, and technical clothing became symbols of modernity and dynamism. The line between sportswear and streetwear began to blur.

The 1990s and 2000s saw the growing influence of urban culture, hip-hop, and celebrities on women's sportswear. Loose-fitting garments, iconic sneakers, and prominent logos became style elements in their own right. Sportswear was no longer solely associated with physical activity but with a cultural, social, and generational identity. Luxury fashion designers themselves began incorporating sporty elements into their collections.

This popularity reflects the growing importance placed on comfort, versatility, and an active lifestyle, even though, statistically, a significant proportion of sports leggings will never see the inside of a gym.
