Classic Recipe: Shaker or Spoon?Pour 4.5 cl of Cuban rum, 2.5 cl of dry white vermouth, 1.5 cl of white CuraƧao (or other Triple Sec like Cointreau) and 0.5 cl of grenadine syrup into a mixing glass with ice. Strain and serve in a Martini glass. |
The drink originated in Cuba. The first mention of it dates back to 1919, when a recipe appeared in a Cuban newspaper. Although the exact origin of the drink is unclear, it became popular thanks to German-American bartender Eddie Woelke, who escaped Prohibition by working at the Jockey Club bar in Havana.
Woelke prepared the cocktail and dedicated it to then-president Gerardo Machado. The drink was one of Machado's favorites and spread among the Cuban upper class.
