Negroni

Features

The Negroni is a classic Italian cocktail, renowned for its balanced taste between bitterness, sweetness and the strength of the alcohol.

The Negroni is served as an aperitif and is one of the official cocktails of the IBA (International Bartenders Association).

Classic recipe

Pour 3 cl of Gin, 3 cl of Sweet Vermouth (Red), and 3 cl of Campari directly into an old-fashioned glass with ice. Stir gently and garnish with an orange slice.

Background

The Negroni is said to have been born in 1919 in Florence, Italy, at Caffè Casoni (now Caffè Giacosa). The most popular story tells of Count Camillo Negroni, an Italian aristocrat, who asked bartender Fosco Scarselli to enhance his Americano (a cocktail made with red vermouth, Campari, and soda water) by replacing the soda water with gin.

To mark the difference, the bartender added an orange slice instead of a lemon twist—a detail that would become a Negroni signature.
